Mission

The Metro East Community Air Project (MECAP) is part of Action Research. Illinois (ARI).   ARI is a community engagement program within the College of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Illinois.

MECAP aims to promote community-based efforts to address air pollution through community engagement, education programs and air monitoring throughout the  Metro East St. Louis Region.

This community oriented project will focus on drawing awareness at the neighborhood level to the health risks associated with air pollution, while providing community with the tools to address local air quality and public health concerns.

Long Term Project Goals

At the end of three years, our project aims to:

  • Establish a solid foundation for citizen activism that will sustain the project as a community led 501(c)3 organization.
  • Draw awareness to regional and local air quality issues and how they relate to public health.
  • Foster positive working relationships with citizens, health agencies, community organizations and government representatives working on air pollution and health issues in the Metro East.
  • Contribute to joint community initiatives to address air quality and public health.
